ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING (ADL)
"A useful measure of health status, especially FOR children and frail elderly. Measures of overall mood and appearance as well as how well a person is eating, drinking, eliminating, working or playing"
ACUTE
"Disease of rapid onset, severe symptoms, and brief duration (Webster's 1975)."
ALGORITHM
"A step-by-step procedure for solving a problem or accomplishing some end, esp. by computer." (Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, (1994). 10th Edition, Springfield, MA.)
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
"An expert system or decision tree of bivalent rules. Kosko, B. (1993) Fuzzy Thinking. Hyperion, New York. A machine or computer based analytical process, which parallels the thought processes, logic steps, rules, and intuition used in problem solving. "
CALL CENTER or MEDICAL CALL CENTER
The site from which telephone triage or telehealth takes place.
CALL VOLUME
The number of calls per hour to be handled by trained professionals. May range from 2 (low volume) to 10 (high volume) per hour.
CHRONIC
Medical or psychological disease of long duration involving recurrent symptoms and very slow changes. Gradual onset. Does not imply severity.
CRISIS INTERVENTION
"Action taken to aid the client in a medical or psychological emergency such as respiratory or cardiac arrest, domestic abuse, sexual assault or threatened suicide."
DECISION MAKING SYSTEM
"An expert system, which allows an unqualified person to make a decision that is beyond his/her level of training and experience." (Widman, L.E., (1995), Expert Systems in Medicine Internet Home Page.)"
DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM
"An expert system, which reminds an experienced decision maker of options or issues to consider that s/he once knew but may have forgotten." (Widman, L.E., (1995) Expert Systems in Medicine Internet Home Page.)
DIAGNOSIS
"The art or act of identifying a disease from its signs and symptoms. Merriam-Webster?s Dictionary, (1994).10th Edition, Springfield, MA."
EFFICIENCY
"As relating to telephone triage, the speed with which a call is handled."
EMERGENCY
"Any medical or psychological situation that must be attended to within 4 minutes or less to prevent death (ACEP,1990)."
EMERGENCY MEDICAL DISPATCHER (EMD)
"Trained medical dispatchers who respond to calls to 9ll. They are a certified subspecialty of Emergency Medical Services personnel along with paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). "
EMPIRICAL
"Capable or being verified or disproved by observation or experiment. Merriam-Webster?s Dictionary, (1994).10th Edition, Springfield, MA."
EXPERT COMPUTER SYSTEMS
"Computer programs (software) that analyze data in a way that, if performed by a human, would be considered intelligent." (Widman, L.E., (1995) Expert Systems in Medicine Internet Home Page.)
FIRST RESPONDER
A term coined by the EMS System. An individual who has successfully completed a 40-hour First Responder Course.
GATEKEEPER
A person who processes and/or directs information flow and /or patients.,,
GUIDELINE
An indication or outline of policy or conduct. (Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, 1994.10th Edition, Springfield, MA.) A single statement or a set of statements, which relate to a specific condition or patient problem, covering both medical and nursing care, supported by scientific evidence, not tradition or intuition. HIDDEN AGENDA
"An unspoken, underlying emotional or psychological motivation for the client's call. Hidden agendas may also relate to anxiety or misinformation.",
HOTLINE
"A telephone service which delivers information, referral, or counseling by telephone, often using an 800 number."
LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY
"Any medical or psychological situation which must be attended to within minutes to prevent loss of life, limb, hearing, or sight." (ACEP, 1990).
MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT (MCI)
"A catastrophic accident resulting in loss of many lives or endangerment to many lives, for example, plane crash, explosion or accidental release of Toxic gases" (Clawson, 1990, p. 313)
NON-ACUTE
"Symptom(s) which present no immediate threat or minimal threat to life, limb or any major organ; pain of 4 or below on scale of 10."
NURSING DIAGNOSIS
